Kansas Nonprofit is Flushing Away Poverty
Amzeal News/10516847
HumanKind Ministries will distribute two hundred painted toilets across Wichita, KS to raise funds and awareness for those living in poverty.
WICHITA, Kan. - Amzeal -- Kansas homeless services provider HumanKind Ministries has launched a new fundraising event, Flush Away Poverty—a citywide challenge to raise awareness and funds for the 61,000 people living in poverty in Wichita, KS—and countless more experiencing homelessness— by placing something hard to ignore in yards across the city.
Close to 700 individuals are homeless in Wichita on any given night and HumanKind serves twice that number in their homeless shelters alone every year.
For one week in April, Sedgwick County residents will be able to send full and miniature toilets to anyone they choose. Recipients can flush the toilet forward (or back to its sender), or have it removed and returned to HumanKind. Full-sized toilets will be delivered to homes for a donation of $200, and 5-inch toilet-shaped planters to homes or offices for $50. All proceeds will support HumanKind's year-round programs and services, which include three homeless shelters, 155 low-income apartments, street outreach, and other basic needs programs. HumanKind Ministries serves more than 15,000 people experiencing poverty and homelessness through these programs every year and this winter has seen an unprecedented need in their Emergency Winter Shelters.

"The toilet is the ultimate symbol of basic needs," says HumanKind Ministries President and CEO LaTasha St. Arnault. "This is a unique way to bring attention to the basic needs that so many of us take for granted. It's different, it's bold, and it's hard to ignore."
Flush Away Poverty will take place April 17-23 with toilets are available to secure now at FlushAwayPoverty.org.
