Worldwide Developer Population Grows to 27 Million

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Amzeal -- According to Evans Data Corp™ recently released biannual Worldwide Developer Population Report, the worldwide developer population grew to 27M in 2023. This represents a post COVID growth rate which has recovered with little residual effects from the pandemic. However, other factors have had an effect.  Inflation and general economic malaise have dampened growth rates, as have two wars in the Middle East and European regions, plus a disruption in the technology arena caused by a severe contraction in the existing technology vendor landscape.  At the same time AI is revolutionizing software development and upending many expectations previously entertained for specific technologies.

One continuing theme is that the strongest growth is still within the emerging markets of APAC and Latin America. Among the four main regions covered in this report, the Asia-Pacific region continues to have the largest developer population, although Latin America has a similar growth rate. The EMEA region is still being impacted by the war in Ukraine. We count both Russia and Ukraine in that region and while migration between European countries doesn't affect an overall EMEA estimate, the drag of the war on commerce and population does.
