UDC and DC Fire & EMS Partner on New Paramedic Program
Amzeal News/10589436
WASHINGTON - Amzeal -- The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), in collaboration with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS), announced a new paramedic program designed to advance emergency medical technicians (EMTs) into certified paramedics. This groundbreaking initiative will offer EMTs an Associate of Science (AS) or a Paramedicine Certificate, marking a significant step toward addressing the critical need for qualified paramedics in the District of Columbia.
As the need for emergency medical professionals rises, this new program will provide a direct pathway for career advancement, offering EMTs in the District an affordable and accessible opportunity to obtain a paramedic certification. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average entry-level salary for paramedics in Washington, D.C. is approximately $53,180, compared to $38,930 for EMTs, underscoring the financial benefits for EMTs who earn their paramedic certification.

"Today's announcement exemplifies UDC's commitment to serving as the District's workforce and economic mobility engine," said President Maurice D. Edington. "Our new paramedic program represents a transformative opportunity for EMTs to gain critical skills through high-quality education and training, to grow in their careers, and ultimately to contribute to the health and safety of their communities."
UDC Community College Dean Marilyn Hamilton also lauded the program's goals, which include not only filling a growing need for paramedics but also creating new opportunities for career advancement and higher education. "By offering both a certificate and an associate degree pathway, we are ensuring that our graduates are prepared to meet the immediate demands of the workforce while also laying the groundwork for future educational and professional growth," said Hamilton. "This initiative is an important step in strengthening our city's emergency response network and providing EMTs with the tools they need to succeed."

Program Details: The program will enroll its first cohort in FY26, with each cohort admitting up to 20 students, who will undergo a rigorous training regimen, including classroom instruction, practical skills training and field internships. Enrollment will be open to EMTs who reside in the District and are employed by emergency medical service providers.
Investment and Support: DCFEMS has committed $1.9M over two fiscal years to launch the program, covering essential costs for personnel, infrastructure and educational resources. Additionally, DCFEMS will actively support recruitment efforts, provide classroom materials and administrative support, and facilitate students' clinical experiences across various health care facilities.
Regulatory Compliance and Accreditation: The program will undergo a comprehensive approval process, aligning with standards set by CoAEMSP and the D.C. Department of Health. UDC is committed to rigorous quality assurance measures, including regular assessments of faculty, resources and facilities, to ensure compliance with all accreditation standards.
