Morven Museum & Garden to host first Slave Dwelling Project experience ever offered in New Jersey October 12 and 13

Joe McGill's Slave Dwelling Project brings historians and the public together to educate, collaborate and organize resources to illuminate African American history related to slave ancestry.

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sept. 13, 2018 - Amzeal -- Morven Museum & Garden is honored to host a Slave Dwelling Project Community Program free to the public on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13  bringing Joe McGill's important program to New Jersey for the first time.

The weekend's activities include a guided tour of the Witherspoon-Jackson historic neighborhood, curator-led tour of Morven's reimagined permanent exhibition detailing its slave narrative, supper in the new Stockton Education Center followed by a group conversation around a firepit in Morven's kitchen garden.

A small number of guests will sleep over in the Mansion on Friday evening with Mr. McGill where enslaved families are believed to have slept. The public is invited to Morven on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. to hear reflections of those who slept over during a light breakfast.

Saturday's activities include performances by ethnomusicologist and slave descendant Jake Blount, rare Stockton family documents displayed by Historical Society of Princeton's Executive Director Izzy Kasdin, ancestry and genealogical research information presented by Princeton Public Library staff, take-home art project presented by the Arts Council of Princeton, and liberty-themed interactive chalkboard art wall.
