ROSEMONT, Ill., Oct. 1, 2024 ~ Chicago-based Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) has recently announced the release of its first-ever Sustainability Report, showcasing the company's commitment to responsible waste services and environmental sustainability. As the nation's fifth-largest independent waste diversion, recycling, and portable services provider, LRS has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
According to LRS CEO Matt Spencer, this report is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire organization. "This was a year of extensive growth at all levels of LRS, which is why we are honored to be publishing our inaugural Sustainability Report," said Spencer. "It serves as a benchmark to track our impact on reshaping the future of waste and recycling and is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation."

The report highlights LRS' achievements in various areas, including innovation and sustainability. The company has been exploring advanced sorting technologies to enhance recovery efforts for customers, resulting in over 92,000 tons of paper, cardboard, cartons, 33,000 tons of metal, 23,000 tons of glass, and 10,000 tons of plastic being diverted from landfills in 2023.
LRS also prioritizes employee safety and culture by investing in new programs to minimize risks and foster a culture of growth. This investment has led to a 15% reduction in total recordable incidents from 2021-23. Additionally, 127 employees became OSHA 10 certified in 2023.
The company's recently opened material recovery facility (MRF), The Exchange Material Recovery Facility (MRF), located in Chicago processes all recyclable materials from the city's blue cart recycling program and beyond. This facility handles an equivalent of more than 500 tons per day from over 620,000 homes.

In addition to its operational achievements, LRS also engages with the community through various initiatives. In 2023 alone, over 800 guests toured The Exchange, and more than 1,200 students and community members were involved in educational initiatives. These efforts aim to promote transparency around the recycling process and foster a deeper understanding of the community's role in LRS' sustainability mission.
Furthermore, LRS has set emission reduction goals after conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory in 2022. The company has developed a comprehensive plan centered around landfill emissions capture, route optimization, and decarbonization of equipment.
As Illinois' largest private waste company and the fifth-largest in the nation, LRS serves over 900,000 customers through waste diversion, recycling, and portable services. With operations across eight states, the company has a deep understanding of local regulations and market needs. Through organic growth and strategic acquisitions, LRS remains committed to reshaping the future of waste and recycling.
