IT Wes Publishes Guide to In-House AI for Small Businesses, Including When to Skip It

TUCSON, Ariz. - Amzeal -- TUCSON, Arizona. IT Wes LLC has published a free guide answering a question the company reports hearing more often from business owners: whether there is a way to use AI without sending company information to an outside provider.

The short answer is yes. A capable language model can run on hardware sitting in the office, with no account, no per-token billing, and no request leaving the building. The guide covers when that is worth doing and, at some length, when it is not.

It follows an earlier IT Wes guide on AI-built internal tools, which named business data going into AI services with nobody checking retention as a common small business failure pattern. Running a model in-house removes that question.

"The honest answer for a lot of businesses is that they do not need this," said Wesley Schaeppi, founder of IT Wes LLC. "But if someone is pasting customer records into a chat window because it is convenient, then yes, it is worth thinking about. Those are two very different situations, and most writing on local AI only describes the second one."

The guide identifies graphics memory rather than budget as the real constraint, gives approximate tiers for what different amounts make possible, and notes that a well-specified gaming computer is often the entry point.

It is also direct about limits. Local models are described as weaker at the hardest reasoning, unable to handle very long documents, slow on undersized hardware, and dependent on somebody owning maintenance. The recommendation is to use one for routine work and keep a paid service for the difficult remainder.

A section titled "when not to do this" advises skipping local AI entirely if usage is occasional, if nobody wants to own the upkeep, or if the business has no policy yet about what data goes where.

"Running your own model is a technical control layered on a decision about handling data," Schaeppi said. "If nobody has decided what may be shared and what may not, the model does not fix that. It just moves where the confusion happens."
