About Nikko
Over more than 1,200 years, Nikko, Japan has developed a rich Shinto religious history closely connected to nature. During the Edo period, Nikko was home to the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun, who was revered as the "Toshogu Daigongen." During this period, the "Nikko Kaido" (Nikko Highway) was established as the route for successive shoguns and feudal lords to visit. In the mid-19th century, several foreign embassies built summer retreats along the shores of Nikko's Lake Chuzenji. Foreign diplomats were drawn to the area's natural beauty and cool climate, even in summer. Tourist attractions in Nikko include Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the Sleeping Cat plaque, the Three Wise Monkeys plaque, the Irohazaka Winding Road, Mount Nantai, Ryuzu Falls, and Nikko Futarasan Shrine (https://www.visitnikko.jp/en/spots/nikko-futara...), and more, numbering around 500 sites.
