Anniversary Highlights Fibre Channel's Enduring Role in Secure, High-Performance Storage Networking as FCIA Unveils Next-Generation Standard Optimized for AI And HPC Datacenters
MINNEAPOLIS - Amzeal -- The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA), the leading organization dedicated to advancing Fibre Channel technology, today celebrates its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of leadership in shaping the future of storage networking. Since its founding in 1995, FCIA has served as a global voice for the Fibre Channel industry, promoting education, standards development, and adoption across enterprises, datacenters, and mission-critical environments worldwide.
Coinciding with this milestone anniversary, FCIA also announced the completion of the new INCITS Fibre Channel standard for FC-RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access over Fibre Channel). This breakthrough marries the trusted performance and security of Fibre Channel with the low-latency, high-throughput advantages of RDMA, creating a transformative solution for the most demanding workloads in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).

Since its inception, FCIA has guided Fibre Channel through continuous innovation, delivering the performance, reliability, and security that enterprises demand. Over three decades, Fibre Channel has become the backbone of mission-critical storage networks in industries such as finance, healthcare, government, and large-scale enterprise IT. The association's leadership has helped organizations achieve high-performance, lossless data transport at every generation, while preserving backward compatibility and investment protection.
"Celebrating 30 years of innovation is a testament to the strength and adaptability of Fibre Channel," said Mark Jones, President of FCIA. "From its beginnings in the 1990s to today's advanced workloads, Fibre Channel has consistently delivered secure, high-performance solutions that customers can trust."
Introducing FC-RDMA: A New Era for AI and HPC

The INCITS FC-PI-8 standard development for 128GFC was completed in 2023 and signals the start of product development by Fibre Channel component suppliers. Already we are seeing a number of Fibre Channel component and test equipment suppliers advance in their development of 128GFC solutions, we expect to see 128GFC products in the marketplace by the beginning of 2026. The FCIA typically conducts readiness events and "plugfests" in an effort to foster interoperability testing and audit conformance to industry standards, please contact the FCIA for more information.
As FCIA enters its fourth decade, the association remains committed to advancing Fibre Channel technology and supporting the global ecosystem of vendors, integrators, and customers. With the addition of FC-RDMA, organizations can extend the value of their Fibre Channel networks while unlocking new possibilities for AI, HPC, and other data-intensive workloads.

Introducing FC-RDMA: A New Era for AI and HPC
The new FC-RDMA standard extends Fibre Channel's capabilities to meet the performance demands of next-generation applications:
- Ultra-low latency: By enabling direct memory access between systems without CPU involvement, FC-RDMA minimizes data transfer times.
- High throughput: Optimized for large data sets, it supports faster job completion in HPC clusters and accelerates distributed AI training.
- Reduced CPU overhead: Offloading data transfers frees up CPU resources for compute-intensive AI and simulation tasks.
- Seamless integration: FC-RDMA runs over existing Fibre Channel infrastructure, protecting prior investments.
- Enhanced security: Retains Fibre Channel's robust zoning, masking, and encryption to safeguard sensitive workloads.
