Digital Journey: Transformation Woes, DT World 2019 Kicks Off + Emirates NBD's Innovation Voyage

Amzeal News/10315658
NEW YORK - May 14, 2019 - Amzeal -- Technology promises so much in terms of productivity and proficiency, but delivering on those promises requires effective deployment – and companies must also be agile enough to evolve over time. Remember: The buck stops with your end users. They have to take an interest in your solutions, or else you are kaput. In other words, smart companies put their customers first.

In this episode of "Digital Journey", we learn how overwhelmed teams are by digital transformations, jet over to Nice, France for The Digital Transformation World 2019 Conference plus find out details regarding Emirates NBD's drive to run 1,000 containers and more than 500 APIs on its platform.

In our lead story, we assumed fundamental structural issues affecting companies like inefficient legacy processes, skill gaps, and lack of alignment would become more exposed over time. But now we have the research to back it up.

In other words, IT leaders are insecure about many top objectives identified for 2019, according to research recently published by The Hackett Group.

"IT has made progress on partnering with the business to move forward with digital transformation" said Rick Pastore, Senior Director at The Hackett Group. "But the low number of improvement initiatives planned for 2019 imply that IT leaders simply don't know how to fix their remaining shortcomings, or they're overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of the challenge."

This research suggests teams are hampered by legacy issues like infrastructure complexity, outdated architectures, and project development approaches that are an impediment to agility.

The study found that IT organizations have low capability to address issues in many other areas ranked as the most important, including: improving functional agility; improving customer-centricity; improving data management and analytical capabilities; aligning skills and talent with business needs; and modernizing data architecture.

The issue is made worse by the fact that IT is severely resource constrained. The research found that less than 20 percent of IT organizations report a current or planned improvement initiative in these areas in 2019. Only one in four is addressing known talent gaps and alignment issues. Less than 10 percent are working on modernizing their data architecture.

In the meantime, 850 companies generating $2 trillion in revenue and serving five billion customers across 180 countries will meet today Nice France for TM Forum's three-day Digital Transformation World 2019 Conference.

The TM Forum has a 30-year heritage showcasing collaboration in telecommunications.

"In 2018, (we) focused around the art of the possible, the vision for what digital transformation could mean for the telecoms industry" says TM Forum. "In 2019, we are proving it, with hundreds of case-studies, live demos of real-life solutions and practical next steps that you can apply to your business."

32 distinct "projects" will be demonstrated at the DTW gathering. They incorporate some of today's most complex business and technology challenges today, including 5G, data management, virtual and augmented reality, edge computing, AI and the automation of business processes for regulatory compliance. These projects bring together companies large and small to create innovative solutions.

For example, "AI Indexing for Regulatory Practice" is a catalyst exploring ways to intelligently automate the identification of on-air content using AI. The goal is to more effectively measure and report against compliance metrics set by external regulatory bodies.

"The convergence between telecom and media and entertainment has opened up exciting opportunities for our members to work alongside some of the world's leading media companies to solve pressing business challenges," said Andy Tiller, EVP at TM Forum.

In other digital journey news, Emirates NBD Group's goal was to become a global digital leader in banking and deliver first-to-market innovations through a digital transformation journey.

In 2017, the bank set out to enhance the capabilities of its end-to-end technology platforms including IT architecture, infrastructure, security and data. One of its key pillars was establishing a distributed private cloud platform, using technology similar to cloud-native companies while being able to meet required standards of security and resiliency.

Using Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, the industry's most comprehensive enterprise Kubernetes platform, and Red Hat 3scale API Management, Emirates NBD was able to establish a more secure and scalable private cloud platform with the flexibility to accommodate a future hybrid cloud model.

Now Emirates NBD's private cloud platform provides infrastructure, data and other resources for end-to-end development—from provisioning to production—through an as-a-Service model to groups throughout the bank. Group-wide data storage and access are consolidated on the platform to enable real-time customer intelligence.

With support for more secure, open API sharing, Emirates NBD launched a developer portal allowing it to more easily integrate and collaborate with FinTechs, government institutions, technology partners and regional institutions.

Emirates NBD has implemented a continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipeline, supported by automated testing, compiling, and transfer of code and containers - all with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. The bank runs more than 1,000 containers and more than 500 APIs on its platform with average adoption of the platform increasing 20-30% per month.
