HARTLAND, Wis., Aug. 1, 2024 ~ Batteries Plus, the nation's leading specialty battery retailer, has announced a new partnership with the Green Bay Packers and the U.S. Department of Energy to launch a battery recycling initiative. This collaboration, backed by the Department of Energy, aims to reshape battery recycling efforts across the country and engage communities in a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.

The announcement was made at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, where highly visible recycling stations will be implemented at Wisconsin Batteries Plus locations. An interactive booth will also be set up at Lambeau Field to educate consumers on how to properly recycle batteries. Cirba Solutions, Batteries Plus's preferred recycling partner for 14 years, will facilitate the recycling process as the brand encourages fans to visit their local Batteries Plus store to recycle their old and used batteries.

In addition, Batteries Plus is launching recycling contests with local schools in Wisconsin. The winning class from each selected school will receive an exclusive Lambeau Field experience. The interactive booth will also be present at select Packers games this season, including preseason Family Night and games against the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals. Fans can enter to win exclusive Packers experiences and prizes.

Scott Williams, CEO of Batteries Plus, stated that this partnership is a pivotal step in their mission to make battery recycling accessible and mainstream. By eliminating recycling fees at their stores and developing advanced recycling workstations, they are removing barriers and making it easier for consumers to do their part in preserving natural resources and strengthening the domestic supply chain.

The Green Bay Packers, known as the winningest team in NFL history and a staunchly community-supported organization, will help spread awareness about this initiative. The first Batteries Plus location opened in Green Bay in 1988, making this partnership even more significant for both organizations. This effort complements the Packers' existing 'Green Team' sustainability efforts on gameday and every day at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Popkey, Packers Director of Public Affairs, expressed their pride in being a part of this vital initiative. As a team deeply rooted in the community, they recognize the importance of sustainability and are committed to promoting responsible recycling practices among their fans.

Last month, the Department of Energy entered discussions with Batteries Plus for a $7 million grant to help install portable consumer battery recycling drop-offs at their stores. Along with eliminating the costs for recycling batteries, the Department of Energy and Batteries Plus are dedicated to educating consumers on lithium battery recycling on a national scale in each community where the brand operates, with a focus on Justice40 communities. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm was present at the announcement to show support for this initiative before its national rollout.

Secretary Granholm stated that this is a significant step towards American energy independence and building a full American supply chain. She emphasized the need to responsibly extract critical materials from batteries by recycling them instead of extracting new resources. Partnering with Batteries Plus and an esteemed football team like the Packers will create a sustainable cycle.

While this initiative is initially being launched in Wisconsin Batteries Plus locations and Lambeau Field, it will eventually be rolled out nationwide. For 30 years, Batteries Plus has been America's destination for battery recycling, processing 50 million pounds of batteries annually, including over 1 million pounds of lithium-based batteries. This partnership with the Department of Energy and the Green Bay Packers will allow Batteries Plus to expand upon their existing processes and make battery recycling more mainstream and efficient in order to protect the environment.
